Modern Lakehouse Kitchen: The Heart of Family Gatherings

Award-winning lake home with kitchen remodel; Oostburg, Wisconsin: This sprawling lake house belongs to two siblings who plan to use it as a year-round vacation home for their families. The owners loved the property, which sits right on Lake Michigan, but it needed updating and improving. The heart of this home is the kitchen and the central space for entertaining. Ideally, the brothers wanted a communal kitchen that was open to and accessible from the adjacent entertaining areas on the first floor.

Challenge: Even with a wall of windows and the lights on, the original kitchen was dark for most of the day. A large gap between the island and the back counter required extra movement within the “kitchen triangle.” Two horizontal windows were awkwardly placed between the counter and the cabinet, perhaps to provide more natural light when working at the counter or to see who was in the driveway.

SolutionTimber Innovations reorganized the layout, creating a more attractive and efficient work and informal dining space. The custom-made island built of bronze Hafele frame and Lumicor panels added visual impact and a work/casual dining space.

SolutionTo bring in more natural light, they opened the lakeside kitchen wall with an expansive Marvin Multi-slide entry, inviting the beauty and sounds of the lake into the house. This required adding a support beam above the installation to support the roof.

Challenge: A support column where the kitchen, south dining and living rooms conjoin interrupted the flow of the interior space and blocked the view of the lake from the kitchen.

SolutionRemoving it meant replacing it with another engineered beam to support the roof.

Designed for multiple cooks preparing Thanksgiving dinner, a teens’ pizza party around the breakfast bar, with a cozy spot by the fire for the older generation to enjoy the celebrations, the entire kitchen was updated to accommodate a multigenerational family. We made sure the lake could be viewed from every angle in the room. We took a rustic kitchen that was a bit neglected and created a spacious “heart of the home” for family gatherings to be enjoyed and that will create lasting, fond memories for generations..

This kitchen was part of a larger remodeling project — Shingle-style Lakehouse — that won the following award and recognition:
