Award Winning Mid-West Contemporary Home Remodel

Whole house remodel; Greater Green Bay area, Wisconsin: The Timber Innovations craftsmen took a dated waterfront cabin that lacked character and turned it into a stylish and charming Mid-West Contemporary family home. Our skilled team of professional artisans enhanced the curb appeal of the home by adding sweeping rooflines to the front of the house, creating prominence.

This home renovation included a kitchen remodel, bath remodel, custom cabinetry, and architectural millwork. The exterior of the home was redesigned by adding a new roof, new windows and architectural details.

The home presented some interesting challenges:

  • Additions over the years left the kitchen in the center of the front of the house, a staircase to the basement in a corner, and confusingly, created two front doors. Even with additions, the house felt small.

  • Zoning laws restricted expanding the home's footprint.

  • The kitchen was a galley style with room for only one person to work within the space.

  • Family areas were walled off, not conducive to the family gathering together or being able to do different activities in the same area.

  • The only way to get to the shore was to either go out the front door and walk around the house, or go out the basement door in the back.

  • During renovation, previously unknown fire damage was discovered.

  • Other than looking out the window, there wasn't a way to enjoy the river from the house.

  • The roof line made the house one dimensional and plain.

  • Due to weight restrictions on local roads during the summer, work requiring heavy equipment needed to be completed in winter.

Timber Innovations creatively addressed these challenges by:

  • Opening up the kitchen, dining and living rooms so there was space for help in the kitchen or for the kids to sit and chat while dinner was being prepared.

  • The corner staircase was removed to expand the kitchen and a central staircase was created to connect all levels.

  • A deck on the back right side of the house and a screened in porch on the back left created two outdoor rooms to enjoy the Fox River views.

  • Large heated pads were brought in to thaw the frozen ground that needed to be excavated.

  • In some areas, larger windows and glass doors were added. This not only allowed entrance to the outdoor spaces but also gave the illusion of a more room and brought in more light.

  • More living space was added vertically. The primary suite, added above the kitchen, also created a variation in the originally level roof line.

The completed renovation raised the visibility of the home, giving it presence among the other homes on the street and curb appeal. One of the many highlights of the interior is an office retreat with hand-milled, custom Cherry cabinets that display an impressive guitar collection. As a special gift to the homeowners, Paul handcrafted an Oak desk from a favorite tree removed from the property prior to construction.
