Award-winning kitchen remodel; Sheboygan, Wisconsin: This Mid-Century Modern home was designed by Eugene Wasserman in 1958. The new homeowner, who grew up living on a lake in Sheboygan, wanted to improve her view of Lake Michigan, open up the living space, and be able to showcase her art collection while remaining true to the architect’s design aesthetic.

Challenge: Although the house was a Mid-Century Modern design, known for its open plan, this home was compartmentalized.

Solution: In order to open up the living space, the walls between the kitchen and living room were removed.



Challenge: The original kitchen was small with limited storage and workspace. The only counter faced the lake, but despite the windows, the view was limited.

Solution: By moving the appliance wall to the back wall and adding a large island, the space immediately becomes more inclusive and open. The oversized island is the main work surface, so the cook can still enjoy a view of the lake while preparing meals.

Challenge: The kitchen floor was not level with the living room floor.

Solution: The new tile floor, which includes radiant heat, was raised up to be even with the parquet floor, which was laid on top of a concrete slab.

Challenge: Despite having a half wall of windows, views of the lake and the surrounding property were limited. There was one small door to the lake-facing porch.

Solution: A wall of floor-to-ceiling Marvin multi-sliding glass doors were added between the kitchen and the porch. The new multi-slide glass unit would not hold up the roof, so a support beam was added above the doors to reinforce the roof joists. Temporary walls were built on both sides of the beam to support the structure until the beam was in place.

This kitchen remodel created a premier space for entertaining with places for quiet conversations as well as large celebrations. One NARI Milwaukee RotY (Remodeler of the Year) judge remarked that “This remodel is a great use of space. The new patio window allows for so much natural light and gave the homeowner the entertaining space they wanted.” Guests can be in four distinctive indoor spaces, but still be all together while enjoying the amazing lake views.

This room was part of a larger remodeling project which included a luxury bath with fireplace and walk-in shower. This project has won the following awards:
